Emma Stone went from cool girl-next-door to a daring arthouse darling. A lot of that is thanks to wild Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, who granted us Emma Stone's very first nude scene. Ever since then, the pair have continued to work together, including on their most recent film. Their latest film, Bugonia, debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Here's what we know so far.
Bugonia is the latest collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone. Emma plays a CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracy-obsessed men played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. They believe that she is an alien who wants to destroy the Earth. Is she? We find out! The movie is actually a remake of a South Korean film called Save the Green Planet! from filmmaker Jang Joon-hwan.
The film will also star Alicia Silverstone, but we don't have much information on her role yet. Alicia Silverstone and Emma Stone teaming up? Did Yorgos Lanthimos read my diary or something?
Reviews of the film are calling the movie "insane", so that's exciting. That is sort of this director's thing. He delivered Poor Things, The Favourite, Dogtooth, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Lobster, among other weird movies. His movies also love to feature nudity, like his most recent film called Kinds of Kindness. It starred nearly every nude darling around today!
We all know and love Stone's first nude scene in Lanthimos' film The Favourite. She went above and beyond in 2023's Poor Things. She even won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing a young woman figuring out the world for the first time and doing most of her "figuring out" by having sex...lots and lots of sex.
Emma openly enjoys working with her new favorite director. She said at the press conference for the movie: “I love working with Yorgos. I love the material that he’s drawn to and the worlds he wants to explore, and the characters that he’s been generous enough to let me try my hand at."
Lanthimos has said that the movie is "about things going on right now" in our society. He also said of his new film, “Humanity is facing a reckoning very soon and people need to choose the right path; otherwise, I don’t know how much time we have with everything that’s happening in the world, with technology, AI, wars, climate change, and the denial of all these things.”
Did the audience like it? They loved it! The film received a seven-minute standing ovation. If you know anything about these European film festivals, then you know that that means a lot. They love to give long-standing ovations for films that they like! In America, you'd have to really love a movie to stand and clap for that long.
I can't wait for this film to premiere in the States. Even if you don't want to stand up to give the movie an ovation, I have a feeling you might give a stiff ovation in your pants!
